Love Cults, Masquerading Gals, and Subway Sammies: A Digital Visualization and Analysis of the LGBTQ+ Subcultures of Mid-Twentieth Century Boston

By Sam Hurwtiz

My project is titled "Love Cults, Masquerading Gals, and Subway Sammies: A Digital Visualization and Analysis of the LGBTQ+ Subcultures of Mid-Twentieth Century Boston." The goal of the project is to examine, map, and understand the wide variety of queer experiences chronicled in The Mid-Town Journal, a newspaper that covered the South End of Boston from 1938 to 1966. I first became interested in this topic and newspaper while conducting research of Boston's pre-1968 queer history. I hope to pursue this research further in my dissertation."
