The point of the ArcGIS StoryMap is to help visualize the daily life and conditions during the Battle of the Somme. The StoryMap uses an authentic trench map to map out the Somme. The images in the story map exhibit the battle conditions, the armies, and their lives during the Somme. The Battle was not one spot near the river; instead, it was a military conflict across Northern France along the Somme River. Traditional maps can examine the tactics and vast space of a battle but not express the effect of war on human and nonhuman soldiers. The StoryMap includes original photographs from the battle. The main reason there are photographs from WWI is that photography was a task assigned to military personnel. Armies relied on photography to update trench maps. Photography was also necessary to assess the effects of the bombardment.
