Description
Massachusetts Governor John Leverett and the Massachusetts Council write to Captain Anthony Brockles, commandant of the English fort at Pemaquid, Maine. They inform Brockles of the ongoing negotiations for peace with the Kennebec and Penobscot Abenakis, which they seek “for the redemption of those miserable Soules Captives.” To that end, they have sent Major Denison and Esquire Joseph Dudley, who are “fully Instructed to effect the same with such others as are knowne unto & desired by the Indians in a late Aplication to us by the principall Sachem of the Kennebecke Indians.”

Gentlemen
[185] Yours from Pemaquid by the Hands of major Thomas Clarke of July 3rd 1677 we received, & therein perceive your freindly & forward Inclination for the procuration of a setlement of the Inhabitants of those easterne parts who have been so great sufterers in the unhappy warre, the same hath [186] been Considered by us & the result of our thoughts are that yourselves being now vpon the place, & not having yet been Concerned in any Acts of Hostility against them may Sooner obteyne Credence with them for the redemption of those miserable Soules Captives in the hands of those Infidells, and for the Setlement of a peace wth them if to be obteyned with Honor for the accomplishment whereof we have sent Our Trusty & welbeloued freinds major Generall Daniel Dennison & Joseph Dudley Esqr two of our Majestrates fully Instructed to effect the same with such others as are knowne unto & desired by the Indians in a late Aplication to us by the principall Sachem of the Kennebecke Indians wth which Gentlemen; if yow please to Joyne you assistance it may be a Comon benefit to His Majesties Interest in these parts &, resetlement of those parts;
