To explore the project, click on the buttons below or use the sidebar. The web page's layout begins with the timeline, which examines change over time. Then the project moves from the timeline to the weaponry sections, which discusses the advancement of weaponry and weapons employed in the Battle of the Somme. The last component of the project is the StoryMap, and it is used to exemplify the experience of the Somme. Lastly, there is a resources and bibliography page to explore images and sources.
Project Objectives:
- Explore WWI as a modern industrialized war, as seen through the Battle of Somme using digital tools such as Knight Lab Timeline and Arc StoryMap.
- Using primary sources to illustrate the conditions and the experience during the war.
This web page was created in Spring 2022 to fulfill the Digital Humanities Certificate program offered by the Departments of History and English at Boston College. The project hopes to provide resourceful information on World War I and the Battle of the Somme. I hope those learning this topic will find this page beneficial to their understanding of the war and their own research.
Lastly, thank you to Dr. Bee Lehman and Dr. Matthew Naglak for their continuous efforts to help this project to its completion, their valuable input, and technical assistance.
